Metropolis Excavations 2017
"Surface Exploration for the Surroundings of the Ancient City of Metropolis", initiated last year as part of excavations, continues. The excavation work looks into the reasons for Metropolis to be built as a modern and planned city by identifying the early settlements in its surroundings. The aim is to unearth the castles, mausoleums, mounds and other cultural assets located during the excavations and all cultural elements that played a role in the establishment of Metropolis.
The Seat of Honor with Griffins, which enabled Metropolis to be recognized in national and international platforms, is being resculpted out of marble with the pantograph technique. The replica of the Seat of Honor, the original of which is on display at Izmir Archeology Museum, will be exhibited again at the Metropolis Theater once the project is completed.
The excavations carried out for 10 years at the Roman Bath-Palaestra Complex will be completed this year. The Complex, one of the leading structures in the Ancient City of Metropolis, is planned to be opened to visits in the upcoming season. After the excavations are finished, cleaning work for the mosaics of the structure will begin.
