Metropolis Excavations 2018

The Ancient City of Metropolis Rejoins its Seat of Honor with Griffins

The “Seat of Honor with Griffins”, found preserved in the excavations in 1995, was re-sculpted and returned to its two-thousand-year-old original place in the Ancient Theater. The seat was sculpted out of marble with the pantograph technique by the sculptor Sinan İlhan.

This year at the ‘City of the Mother Goddess’ Metropolis, the excavations in the cult area discovered in 2015 and named ‘Zeus Krezimos’ were continued. In previous excavations it was discovered that the chief god of the Hellenic mythology Zeus was mentioned with the title ‘Krezimos’ for the first time in the world in Metropolis and that ‘Krezimos’ meant “protective Zeus who brings abundance and wealth”.

The “Surface Exploration for the Surroundings of the Ancient City of Metropolis” also continued this year. The excavation was aimed to unearth Metropolis and its surrounding trade routes, defense and communication network in ancient times, as well as explore the caves around the city.
